Ultimate Duelist Series - Summer 2017 Information

Q: What happens at an Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational event?

A: The Ultimate Duelist Series (UDS) Invitational is a tournament open only to qualified Duelists who have earned a minimum requirement of UDS Points. They are exciting 2-day events that take place from Saturday to Sunday. Duelists from all over will attend these events to compete for exclusive prizes, and spend the weekend Dueling, trading, and hanging out with hundreds of other Yu-Gi-Oh! fans.

In addition to the Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational, there are numerous Public Events that are open to all Duelists, including tournaments specifically for Duelists born in 2005 or later, and Regional Qualifier tournaments. Competitive or casual, there is something for everyone at an Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational weekend.

A: At the UDS Invitational we will be collecting your Deck list at registration. This means that you must have a completed Deck list ready to hand in when you register for the event. Once a Deck list has been submitted it can no longer be changed.

A: Duelists can register for the UDS Invitational - Summer 2017 on Saturday, September 23rd, 2017 from 8:00 AM - 9:45 AM. The Player Meeting will occur while players are seated for the 1st Round of play, before play begins.

If you are not in line to register by 9:45 AM, you will be enrolled in the tournament with a Round 1 loss, in order to ensure that the event begins on time.

Q: Tell me more about the Ultimate Duelist Series Championship Belt!

A: It is a full-size title belt, featuring the Ultimate Duelist Series logo. Each winner of an Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational will receive one of these Championship Belts, which is theirs to keep.

Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational winners can bring their Championship Belt with them to Tier 2 events (held in North and Latin America), such as Regionals and YCS, in order to receive free entry to the event (no participation packs will be given with free entry). At a YCS, Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational winners will also receive VIP treatment with preferred seating and a 2 round BYE for the YCS!

Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational Winners must bring their Championship Belt with them to the next Invitational, if they wish to receive paid travel and accommodations.

These benefits apply only to Ultimate Duelist Series Champions who have their belts. The benefits are not transferrable to another person.

A: Yes. Each Duelist who registers for the Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational - Summer 2017 will receive one UDS Invitational Lanyard, and one UDS Invitational Pin (while supplies last).

Q: What will I need to bring to the Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational - Summer 2017?

A: You should bring a tournament-legal Deck as described above, along with any tournament supplies you will need; such as paper and pen to track Life Points, dice or counters if you are using cards which require them, extra sleeves to replace any that become damaged, and so forth. If you have a CARD GAME ID number, you should bring your number. You should bring a form of personal identification with a picture. You’ll also need money for your incidentals (food, drinks, Public Events, etc.).

Q: If I’ve never been to an Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational, what should I expect?

A: At the Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational, you will Duel for the chance to be crowned The Ultimate Duelist. Duelists of all ages and skill levels who have earned enough UDS Points will also be there, trying for that title. Duelists will travel great distances to attend the UDS Invitational, so you can expect to meet hundreds of fellow Yu-Gi-Oh! fans from all over.

If you did not manage to earn enough UDS Points to qualify for the Invitational, there will still be a lot to do at the event. We will be running a full schedule of Public Events, including ATTACK OF THE GIANT CARD!!, Regional Qualifiers, UDS Qualifiers, Dragon Duels, and Battle City tournaments - so make plans to attend and take full advantage of these Organized Play offerings!

There are a lot of things you should do to make sure you are prepared before heading to the tournament.

Read over the list of things you will need for the tournament, and make sure you have everything.

You’ll have a better time at the event if you don’t have too many bulky or heavy possessions to carry around, as it can get crowded there on the floor. Think ahead while you are planning what to bring with you.

When you get to the event, you will need to register in order to play. Get there early! Registration will open at 8:00 AM, and there will already be a line of people waiting. You’ll need to be in line by 9:45 AM, or you will not be able to enter the tournament when it begins. We will have to start without you, to make sure the event begins on time – you’ll still be able to play, but you will not be able to enter the tournament until the second round begins and you will start with a Round One match loss.

To register, you’ll need a Registration form, a form of photo ID, your CARD GAME ID. You can get a Registration form at the event, or you can get one to print at home before the tournament by clicking on this link:

Make sure your Registration form is filled out completely before you reach the registration station.

You will also need a CARD GAME ID – this is the ID number used to track you in the tournament. If this is your first event and you want to participate in the Public Events, you will be able to get one at the tournament. Look for the CARD GAME ID station and get a card before you try to register.

Once you have a completed Registration form and a CARD GAME ID, you can register for the tournament.

You will also need a Deck list. A Deck list is required to participate in the UDS Invitational - Summer 2017. You can get a Deck list form at the event when you register, or you can download one to fill out ahead of time by clicking on this link:

Duelists are responsible for paying attention to information from judges and/or tournament staff in order to understand what is going on. If Duelists have questions about the event either beforehand or while they are there, they should check with the Event Manager.

Remember, there is much more to do at a UDS Invitational than just compete in the main tournament. There are lots of Public Events, vendors buying and selling cards, and other Duelists to trade with. Read over the FAQ carefully, and you’ll be off to a great start.

Q: I will be bringing my children to the Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational - Summer 2017. Is there anything I should know?

A: If your child was born in 2005 or later, there is a special tournament each day just for this age group, called a Dragon Duel. You can find more information about Dragon Duels in the Public Events section of this FAQ.

We will have a Parents’ Lounge available, where parents can relax while their children are occupied in the tournament. This area is open only to parents and their children. You are not required to stay on site, but we strongly recommend that you do, especially if your children are young or this is their first event. Please know that the tournament staff cannot be responsible for looking after your children, or their possessions. Always make sure your child has a way to contact you, and is provided with any necessities such as food, drink, or extra money if you do not wish to remain in the tournament area.

When your child is preparing for the event, encourage him or her to leave any bulky or expensive possessions at home. Electronics and large collections of cards are hard to keep track of during a big tournament – your child will have a much easier day without having to worry about these kinds of items.

Trading cards is a big attraction at large tournaments, but if you are concerned about your child trading away valuable cards, talk to him or her before the event and set some guidelines. You can always have your child check with you before making a trade.

Q: Will there be meal breaks during the tournament?

A: There will not be any meal breaks scheduled into the tournament.

Q: What if someone who came with me does not know how to play?

A: If someone is attending the Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational who does not know how to play Yu-Gi-Oh!, do not worry. We will have capable volunteers on site who will be more than happy to teach them how to play.

Q: What happens if I am not done with my Match after 40 minutes? (Swiss Rounds – Tier 2 Events)

A: Sometimes a Match will not be finished when the time ends for a round. If this happens, the Duelist should note whose turn it is when time is called, and raise their hands for a judge. The judge should be notified that the Match is ongoing and whose turn it is. The judge may or may not stay to supervise the End of Match procedure, but should ensure that both Duelists understand the following procedure.

Please follow these instructions when proceeding to End of Match procedures during the Swiss portion of the tournament:

Continue until the end of the current turn.
If the Duel is not over at the end of the turn, go to “Extra Turns.”
Extra Turns = Conduct (5) additional turns starting from the opponent’s turn.
If a win condition (a Duelist’s Life Points is reduced to 0 or an instant win condition such as the effect of Exodia the Forbidden One or Final Countdown) occurs within these (5) turns, the Duel ends as normal.
If a win condition does NOT occur within these (5) turns, the Duelist who has higher Life Points after the “Extra Turns” (5 turns) wins.
If both Duelists’ Life Points are the same after the “Extra Turns” are completed, the Duel is considered a Draw.

After the Duel is concluded, the Duelist who has won the most Duels is declared the winner of the Match. If both Duelists now have the same number of Duel wins, the Match is a Draw.
If both Duelists won one Duel and the third Duel ends in a Draw, the Match is considered to be a Draw.
If time is called before a Duel begins (during Side Decking, before drawing their opening Hands), and both Duelists have won the same number of Duels, the Match is considered to be a Draw.
If time is called before a Duel begins (during Side Decking, before drawing their opening Hands), and one Duelist has won more Duels, the Duelist with more wins is declared the winner of the Match.
Duelists may not choose to intentionally end a match in a Draw. Intentionally ending a Match in a Draw, or stalling to have a Match end in a Draw, is against tournament policy and could result in a Disqualification.

Match Draws may only occur during the Swiss portion of a tournament and only during End of Match procedures. Duelists may not intentionally end a Match in a Draw. Intentionally ending a Match in a Draw, or stalling to have a Match end in a Draw, is against tournament policy and could result in a Disqualification.

The Swiss rounds of the Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational and the Dragon Duels will use this End of Match Procedure.

Q: What happens if I am not done with my Match after 40 minutes? (Swiss Rounds – Tier 1 Events and Single-Elimination)

A: During Single-Elimination rounds, if Duelists have not completed their matches during their allotted time limit, proceed to End of Match procedures. Please follow these instructions when proceeding to End of Match procedures during the Single-Elimination portion of the tournament:

Continue until the end of the current turn.
If the Duel did not end at the end of the turn, go to “Extra Turns.”

Extra Turns = Conduct (3) additional turns starting from the opponent’s turn.

If a win condition (a Duelist is reduced to 0 Life Points or an instant win condition such as the effect of Exodia the Forbidden One or Final Countdown) occurs within these (3) turns, the Duel ends as normal.

Life Points are checked after the turn has completed but before the opponent’s turn begins.
If a Duelist’s Life Points reach 0 or if a win condition occurs during the turn, normal game play rules apply.

Once the winner has been determined for the current Duel, the Match winner is determined.

If a Duelist has more wins than his or her opponent, that Duelist wins the Match.
If both Duelists have the same number of Duel wins, or if time is called in between Games of a Match, they will begin a new Duel with specific guidelines.

Neither Duelist may use his or her Side Deck.
Duelists must use a random method (die roll, coin flip, etc.) to determine who will go first.
The Duel will continue for a total of (4) turns, two turns for each Duelist, unless a Duelist manages to win the Duel before the (4) turns are up.
Once the four turns are completed, Life Point totals are compared and the Duelist with the highest Life Point total wins the Match.
If both Duelists’ Life Points are the same after the (4) turns are completed, then play will continue on a turn-by-turn basis, with the Duelist with the most Life Points at the end of a turn being declared the winner of that Game. Please use the same criteria listed above (Step 5).

Draws cannot occur during Single-Elimination. There must always be a winner.

All Single-Elimination Public Events and the Generation Duel will use this End of Match Procedure.

Duelists must be present for the start of the first round of each event for which they register, in order to receive the entry points. You cannot register in more than one event at a time. If you register for an event while you are still enrolled in a previous event, you will forfeit all Public Event points for all events in which you are simultaneously registered.

Q: What is a Swiss Round Tournament?

A: Players are paired off based on each player’s win/loss record. Players are not eliminated when they lose a match during Swiss tournaments – instead, they will continue to be paired against players with similar records for all remaining rounds of the event.

Q: What is a Single-Elimination Tournament?

A: Half of the tournament is eliminated after each round – the losing player is out of the tournament, while the winner goes on to the next round. This continues until only one player remains, who is then declared the winner.

Q: What is the Generation Duel Tournament and what are the rules?

A: The Generation Duel Tournament is a new event where Duelists can play a Deck based off of one of the five different anime series (eras) of Yu-Gi-Oh! Each era has its own Forbidden & Limited List. Click to find out each restriction.

The Generation Duel Tournament is a Modified Advanced Format, Constructed event. The Number of players will determine the number of rounds that are played.

At the end of the rounds of Swiss the Duelist that are ranked 1st–4th place will receive the Generation Game Mat that corresponds to the era of their deck.

Q: What is a Dragon Duel?

A: Dragon Duel tournaments are exclusive to Duelists born before a certain calendar year, with the calendar year requirement moving forward after the World Championship each year. The current year requirement is for Duelists born on 2005 or later.

The Dragon Duels at the Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational - Summer 2017 will be Sealed Play using Battle Pack: Epic Dawn. Here are the rules for the Dragon Duel Sealed Play:Each Dragon Duelist is given 10 sealed Battle Packs.
The Dragon Duelists then need to open all of the Battle Packs and separate the Xyz monsters from the rest of the cards.
The Dragon Duelists will then be given 20 minutes to look over their cards, build and sleeve their 40 card main Deck, should they choose to sleeve their deck, they must do so with tournament-legal sleeves. All Dragon Duelists will receive a pack of WCQ Sleeves. You do not need to use these sleeves in the event.
Once steps 2 thru 4 are completed the Duelists then will play against their first round opponent in a best 2-out of-3 match.

There is no entry fee for this Dragon Duel tournament. The Battle Pack participation product is provided at no cost by Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc.

Participants are required to provide proof of age in order to participate in a Dragon Duel (Copy of Birth Certificate, Passport, etc).

Duelists must be born in 2005 or later.

A minimum of four (4) Duelists is required to run a Dragon Duel tournament.

A Deck list is required for participation into a Dragon Duel, this will be provided at the event. Dragon Duel tournaments are considered to be Tier 2 events.

All Duelists who earn an invite to the Dragon Duel WCQ or their guardian must fill out a copy the 2018 WCQ Invite Form prior to receiving their prizes. A valid e-mail address must be provided for either the Duelist or the guardian.

Q: What are the prizes for the Dragon Duel?

A: Top 4 Duelists in a Dragon Duel tournament will receive a 2018 Regional Game Mat, a Dragon Duel Medal, and a Dragon Duel T-Shirt.

In addition to the prizes listed above, Invites awarded in the Dragon Duel for the Dragon Duel World Championship Qualifier are based off of attendance, with the top ranking Duelists after the final round of Swiss earning an invite to the Dragon Duel WCQ.

Q: What is the Public Events playoff?

A: The Public Events playoff gives 8 hopeful Duelists a chance to win an Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational Top Cut Game Mat. There are two different playoffs, each of which awards an Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational Top Cut Game Mat to the winner.

Playoff 1: The four Duelists who have accumulated the highest number of Public Event points will play two rounds of Single-Elimination to determine a winner, who will receive an Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational Top Cut Game Mat. In case of a points total tie, the selection will be made by random drawing from the tied competitors.

Playoff 2: Four names will be drawn at random from all Public Events entrants over the course of the weekend. These four competitors will then play two rounds of Single-Elimination to determine a winner, who will receive an Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational Top Cut Game Mat.

Q: Do I need an invitation to participate in the Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational - Summer 2017?

A: The Invitational portion is not an open-to-all event. Only Duelists who have earned at least 100 UDS Points may enter the Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational - Summer 2017 and they do so by redeeming the points at Registration.

Q: What are UDS Points?

A: UDS Points are the qualifying units you must earn in order to participate in an Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational.

UDS Points are awarded based on participation and/or final standings, and judging; in Ultimate Duelist Series Qualifiers, and at most Tier 2 events, such as Regionals, Dragon Duels, OTS Championships, Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series, and World Championship Qualifiers.

UDS Points are linked to your CARD GAME ID number. You must make sure that your CARD GAME ID (formerly COSSY ID) has been properly registered. In order to participate in an Invitational, a Duelist is required to “redeem” the required amount of UDS Points. Once they have entered the event, they no longer carry those points on their total.

Q: Are UDS Points transferable?

A: UDS Points are not transferrable from one Duelist to another.

Q: Do UDS Points expire?

A: No. UDS Points do not expire.

Q: If I am not from North or Latin America, can I compete in the Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational - Summer 2017?

A: Currently, only Duelists participating in select North or Latin American Tier 2 events are able to compete in Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational tournaments.

Q: If I am from North or Latin America, can I compete in Ultimate Duelist Series Invitationals in both Latin and North America?

A: Yes, Duelists from North or Latin America can participate in Ultimate Duelist Series Invitationals in either territory.

Q: How and when will I receive my UDS Points?

A: The Ultimate Duelist Series Leaderboard will list the names and point totals of Duelists who have accumulated 75 or more UDS Points. This list will be updated frequently throughout the year, and will be posted at http://www.yugioh-card.com/en/ultimateduelist/udsrankings.html (You will not receive any sort of physical representation of your UDS Points and you will not be notified via mail or email – your name and CARD GAME ID will be entered on the Leaderboard posted online.

Duelists can find a complete UDS Points Leaderboard PDF at https://yugiohblog.konami.com/?p=22622. All Duelists who have earned points can find their totals here, even if they do not appear on the online Leaderboard (75 points or higher).

The UDS Leaderboard is ranked by point total, then sorted alphabetically by each Duelist’s first name.

Duelists are responsible to verify that their CARD GAME ID numbers are properly registered, and that their registration information is correct.

Remember that Leaderboard information isn’t automatically or instantly updated, so you should allow some time for results to be posted from your tournament – it can take several weeks for the data to be entered into the system, and posted online.

Q: Is travel or hotel included with the Invitational?

A: Only the first place winner of each UDS Invitational tournament will receive paid travel and accommodations for the next UDS Invitational in their territory.

Winners from North America will receive travel and accommodations to the next Invitational in North America, and Latin American winners will receive travel and accommodations to the next Invitational in Latin America.

Paid travel and accommodations are non-transferable and will only be awarded for the next UDS Invitational in the winner’s region.

Q: Can I bring someone with me if I win the trip?

A: If you are 17 or younger, you will also receive travel and accommodations for a parent or guardian. If you are 18 or older, you will win travel and accommodation for yourself only.

Q: What cards are legal for play?

A: Please check the “Products” page online at http://www.yugioh-card.com/en/products/ for at the most current legality dates of Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG product releases, prior to preparing your Deck for the event.

Q: Can I use OCG cards (cards printed for use in Japan and other Asian territories) in my Deck?

A: No, cards printed for Asian markets are not legal for play in TCG tournaments, even if you have a translation available.

Q: Can I use foreign language cards in my Deck?

A: You may use foreign-language copies of legal-for-play cards printed for the TCG market, as long as you can show an official translation of the card when asked to do so by an opponent or tournament official. Translations do not have to be a local language version of the card. An official translation written down or printed is acceptable. If you want to use a local language version of the card as your translation, you must keep that card outside of your Deck box.

Q: I want to judge at Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational - Summer 2017, instead of competing as a player –
how can I apply?

A: If you’re interested in judging at the Yu-Gi-Oh! Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational, please email KDE’s Judge Manager at us-judgesupport@konami.com. We are always on the lookout for judges – please provide your full name, contact information including email and phone number, and a description of your previous judging experience. Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational Event Managers are not responsible for organizing the judge staff, so you will need to contact KDE directly if you want to judge.

Potential judges are required to hold RC-1 certification and be registered as judges in the KDE Judge Program in order to judge at a Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational. All potential judges must pass the online Rulings Comprehension Level 1 test, and then send in a completed application to join the Judge Program. Q: Will there be vendors on site so I can buy single cards and supplies and sell my cards?

A: There will be a number of vendors present, selling single cards, sealed product, and card supplies such as sleeves and deck boxes. Vendors will also be buying cards on site.

Q: Can I buy and sell from other people at the event?

A: Duelists are not allowed to buy or sell from one another at Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational venues. If you do so, you risk incurring penalties, including being disqualified and removed from the event.

Buying and selling includes all items, not just cards or gaming supplies.

Trading is restricted to cards – attendees may not bring other merchandise or items to the venue for trading.

Attendees may not solicit business, hand out flyers, etc. while at the venue.

The Tournament Organizer reserves the right to limit the amount of cards that can be brought into the venue for trading.

Q: I want to vend at an Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational, whom should I contact?

A: Vending space is available free of charge at Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational venues, but is only available to Official Tournament Stores (OTS) in good standing. Vendors must meet certain requirements and agree to abide by set guidelines. Interested vendors should email us-opsupport@konami.com with the header “Request to Vend at [name and location of event].” Vendors will be required to complete and submit an application for each event at which they wish to vend. Keep in mind that KDE handles the applications for vending at Ultimate Duelist Series Invitationals and not the Event Manager.

Cash transactions with anyone other than an approved vendor at an approved location are prohibited at Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational events. Attendees who conduct cash transactions, such as selling of cards or product, to anyone other than an approved vendor at an Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational event risk penalties including disqualification and expulsion from the venue.

Anyone buying and/or selling as an unauthorized vendor at an Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational venue may also risk incurring penalties, including but not limited to, being disqualified and removed from the event, suspensions from Konami Organized Play, and suspension as an Official Tournament Store.

Q: Can I get a CARD GAME ID (previously COSSY ID) number at the Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational, or will I need to have one before I attend the event?

If you previously had a COSSY ID, that same number will carry over as your CARD GAME ID. You will still need to register online at https://cardgame-network.konami.net/.

If you do not remember your previous 10-digit ID, a registration staff member on-site should be able to assist in finding your correct ID. Duelists should avoid acquiring new CARD GAME IDs if the previous ID can be found.
